Gary-Ga-Mel studying for his Reign V interview
gargamel.jpg

I am a native of Nova Scotia, born in Halifax and growing up in rural Guysborough County. While in my teens, I moved to Ontario, the big city of Oakville, where I met and married my wife Ginny. After several years and 2 children, we divorced and I chose to pursue the 'real' me.

I moved to Toronto and became involved in the gay community. I found the community very diverse with a huge split between the various community groups, such as gay men, lesbians, drag queens, leathermen, bisexual, transgendered, etc. Each had their own 'place' and bar. Being new to the lifestyle, I found this very unusual. Being a minority, I couldn't help but wonder why the community couldn't or wouldn't come together.

I became involved in the various community fundraising groups. Being involved with these I met several people from the City of Hamilton, Ontario. We became close friends and I decided to move there. This is where I became involved with the Imperial Court System.

I joined the Barony of Hamilton-Wentworth, St. Catharines/Niagara during Reign I, with Their Excellencies Baron and Baroness I Wally Diamond and Stella Mae. During Reign II, the boundaries between Hamilton and St. Catharines/Niagara split making them two separate Baronies. Since I was living in Hamilton, I stayed as a general member under Their Excellencies Regent Baron I Wally Diamond and Baroness II Robin Sophia Derring. Reign III saw Their Excellencies Baron III Jim Gallo and Baroness III Tracy Bovine Reeves elected as Monarchs. Year IV we were elevated by Empress Jose and the Imperial Court Council to an Imperial Court without sovereignty with the Imperial Court of Toronto as our mother court. Their Imperial Majesties Emperor and Empress I David Hudson and Mercedes were elected as Monarchs. Year V we were elevated to full court status making us the Imperial Sovereign Court of Hamilton/Wentworth under their Imperial Sovereign Majesties Emperor II John Ribson and Empress II Nikki Davies, later replaced by Regent Empress II Tracy Bovine Reeves. I left the court during year five when I moved to Dunville, Ontario, and eventually back to my home province of Nova Scotia.

I arrived in Halifax in October 1999. The first gay bar I attended was Reflections Cabaret followed by the former Eagle where Toolbox East is now located. Next came the newly opened Club NRG. Whereas I liked the other bars, the atmosphere at NRG reminded me of the Windsor Hotel in Hamilton. I immediately felt at home there. I met a person who very much wanted to start a court here and when he asked me to assist, I agreed. Hense, ISCANS was born.

We started on the wrong advice, however following the direction of the Empire of Canada. We were told by the Imperial Court Council that we would not be recognized by the Imperial Court System unless we served a period of time as a Barony. Although our first and second Monarchs, they agreed to hold the titles of Baron and Baroness. Although we had our skeptics, I am proud and honoured to say that we are now still going strong, entering our fifth Reign.

We have raised thousands of dollars in much needed funds for many local charities and promoted unity within all areas of the community - both within different parts of the gay community and unity between the GLBT community and heterosexual communities. From our first Monarchs Baron I Cameron Ballard and Baroness I Studio X LeNoir, our second Baron and Baroness Alexander and Mz. Vicki DeKnight, Baron and Baroness III Ben Dover and Shayda Black to our reigning Monarchs, their Most Imperial Gracious Excellencies Baron and Baroness IV Joseph Penny and Boom Boom, we have continually worked toward a common goal... to make life more enjoyable for those less fortunate and to unite a divided community. We have achieved both.

The hard work must continue and I am asking for your support throughout Reign V as Emperor V of the Imperial Barony Of Halifax, soon to become the the Imperial Sovereign Court of Atlantic Nova Society, icn. The House of Glitter, Glamour and Fast Food.

Thank you,

His Most Imperial Sovereign Majesty.
